 Diferencias entre las palabras reject, decline, refuse and deny

  De la siguiente lista tenemos tres palabras que sirven para rechazar cosas, personas, peticiones,... a diferencia de la palabra "deny" que también sirve para negar algo que no es cierto.

Decline [di KLYN]

  1. To slope downward or aside
  2. To sink; wane; near the end
  3. To lessen in force, health, value
  4. To sink to behavior that is base or immoral
  5. To refuse to accept

Examples:

  • In dealing with a zombie, you need not decline to its level
  • The value of the Euro declined in 2013
  • That shop is in decline and is not what it once was

Deny [di NY)

  1. To declare something untrue
  2. Contradic
  3. To not accept as actual
  4. To reject as unfounded, unreal, etc
  5. To disown
  6. To refuse to acknowledge as one´s own
  7. Rerepudiate
  8. To not allow the use of or access to
  9. Refuse to grant or give
  10. To refuse a person´s request
  11. Deny opposite is accept
  12. To refuse to give somebody something

Examples:

  • Sara denied the charge that she had cheated on her diet
  • I deny all your access to the alcoholic drinks in my restaurant
  • I must deny your request for parole 


Reject [re yt]

  2. To refuse to consider or grant
  3. To refuse to recognize or give affection to
  4. to discard as useless

Examples:

  • The council rejects thousands of job applicants each year
  • The woman rejected my proposal last night

Notes:  

    • A refuse = the place where you put garbaje
    • You can get rejected by a woman on a date
    • You can also feel rejection when she rejects you ;)
