possessives

 Possessives / Los posesivos

The trick in writting is to ask yourself the question, "Who (or what) does it belong to? (Modern language has made who acceptable when it comes first in a sentence, but some people still say, "Whom does it belong to? or even  "To whom does it belong?) If the answer to your question ends in s, add an apostrophe. Then you must see if you need another sound to make the possessive clear. If you need another s sound, add the apostrophe and anther s (as in the last of the following examples).

One girl (uniform)           Who does it belong to?       girl     Add (´s)    girl´s uniform
Two Girls (uniforms)      Who do they belong to?     girls    Add (´)    girls´ uniforms
A man     (coat)                  Who does it belong to?      man   Add (´s)    man´s coat
Men  (hats)                          Who do they belong to?   men   Add (´s)   men´s hats
Children (game)      Who does it belong to?   children Add (´s) Children´s game
A month  (pay)                   Who does it belong to?   month   Add (´s)  month´s pay
Brahms (Lullaby)       Who does it belong to?       Brahms  Add (´) Brahms´ Lullaby
