When someone throws you a curve ball

This expression is very common in colloquial English. It comes from baseball, where the pitcher throws a ball that is extra difficult for the batter to hit. When somebody throws you a curve ball, it means they do something unexpected and (in most cases) undesired. When life throws you a curve ball, it means something bad and unanticipated came up.

1. Everything was going smoothly at first, but life threw me a curve ball and we had to cancel the honeymoon.

2. My date with Mary was going great until she revealed she was actually a man. She/he really threw me a curve ball.

3. If don´t throw you a curveball, you get bored and the mix loses its intented effect. No, I want to get revved up and this song isn´t doing it.
